Charities are a way to give back to the society, socialize or social-climb and feel connected to a common cause. For the most generous celebrities, philanthropy has another benefit, the potential for a major image enhancement. However, this doesn’t mean there are not good intention behind the actions of a celebrity who contributes to charitable organization. Adlai Wertman, the chief of the Chrysalis charity that helps homeless believes that generous celebrities relate to a cause because either their friends or colleagues support charity, or because a loves has suffered from the same condition the organization supports.   • Oprah Winfrey

Billionaire talkshow host Oprah Winfrey is also the founder of Oprah’s Angel Network that encourages people to help others and the Oprah Winfrey Leadership Academy for Girls in South Africa, an organization which helps low income girls to receive a proper education. According to the The Chronicle of Philanthropy, this generous celebrity donated more than $50 million only last year. She also gave $11 million to help rebuild the areas affected by Hurricane Katrina.

  • Angelina Jolie and Brad Pitt

Although Angelina Jolie is a well-known actress, she also supports causes, foundations and charities from all over the world. Her work as the Goodwill Ambassador for United Nations Refugee Agency (UNHCR), Doctors Without Borders, the Afghanistan Relief Organization, Kids in Need of Defense and UNICEF is well known. Moreover, Angelina and her husband, Brad Pitt also started the Jolie-Pitt foundation.
